Welcome Back,

Happy Monday, everyone ☀️
Good morning — here’s to a fresh week, a clear start, and a little momentum building early.

Let me throw out a quick question to get things moving: what if one of the most “responsible” money habits wasn’t always as helpful as it seems?
Reinvesting dividends sounds like a no-brainer… until the tax side quietly sneaks in.

Today’s post breaks down why automatically reinvesting dividends can increase your tax bill — and how being a bit more intentional can give you better control without giving up growth.

Because smart investing isn’t just about what you earn — it’s about what you keep.

Today’s Snapshot

Why Automatically Reinvesting Dividends Can Increase Your Tax Bill

This is not about poor investing.
This is not about bad funds.
This is not about underperformance.

This is about mechanics — and how reinvestment changes tax outcomes even when nothing “new” happens.

Most people assume:

“If I don’t touch the money, I won’t owe tax.”

That assumption is wrong.

The Core Issue: Reinvestment Is Still a Taxable Event

When a dividend is paid:

  • it is income

  • it is reportable

  • it is taxable

Whether you receive cash or immediately reinvest it doesn’t change that.

But it does change control.

Where the Hidden Cost Appears

1. Taxes Get Owed Without Liquidity

When dividends auto-reinvest:

  • tax is due

  • cash is unavailable

  • other assets get sold to pay tax

  • planning becomes reactive

You created income without access to cash.

2. You Lose Timing Control

Reinvestment happens automatically.

You don’t choose:

  • when income is realized

  • whether you need liquidity

  • whether gains should stack that year

  • whether losses could offset

The system decides for you.

3. Cost Basis Complexity Increases Over Time

Auto-reinvestment creates:

  • dozens of micro-lots

  • complex basis tracking

  • harder tax reporting

  • less flexibility later

Selling becomes administratively painful.

That friction discourages better decisions later.

4. Higher Income Years Get Stacked Further

In high-income years:

  • dividends add on top

  • brackets get pushed

  • surtaxes trigger earlier

  • phaseouts accelerate

You didn’t need more income.

You needed control over timing.

Why This Is Rarely Questioned

Because reinvestment feels disciplined.

  • it’s automatic

  • it feels long-term focused

  • it removes temptation

But discipline without control is still expensive.

Thought Of The Day

Fulfillment grows when purpose guides effort, curiosity fuels improvement, and you measure success by progress made rather than applause received along the way.
